For nearly all aficionados of Sports Illustrated, the most sought after issue is the first issue featuring Eddie Mathews on the cover, complete with the tri-fold pages of 1954 Topps Baseball cards. But to the astute collector, the real prizes are the early “dummy” or test issues that were published by Sports Illustrated prior to the release of the their August 16, 1954 masterpiece. The presented collection of three Sports Illustrated magazines includes both of the “dummy” issues and the first regular issue of the famous sports publication. The two “dummy” issues were issued December 5, 1953 and April 19, 1954 respectively and were given to magazine distributors to promote the new endeavor. All three issues are in VG to EX condition with light visible stress marks along the spines. The April 1954 issue does exhibit water damage on the cover (VG) while the remaining pair are clean and in solid (EX) condition. The first regular issue does include the tri-fold sheet within containing the replica 1954 Topps cards. This is a wonderful trio of early sports publications that have a very attractive aesthetic quality.
