In the same vein as the 1955 Esskay Fred Marsh box that sold in our October 2006 auction for five figures, this 1955 Hunter Wiener’s Gordon Jones nearly complete original box is a monumental rarity in the industry. The 1955 Hunter Wiener cards were issued two to a box and were the packaging for the company’s meat products; this box only has the Jones card. The box, when folded, protected the hot dogs and there is evidence of the once contained dogs on the inside of the offered relic. The card itself is in EX-MT condition with almost no evidence of wear and measures 2” wide and tapers from 4-3/4” on the left to 4-1/2” at the right. There is a facsimile autograph and a touch of biographical information at the base of the card. The box, although absent the second card, is in excellent condition. The mere fact that the original function of the box was to package fresh meat products and so most were thrown in the trash made this a scarce relic. The difficulty of locating just the single card from the 1955 Hunter series is an achievement in and of itself but to locate an original box with the fun baseball-oriented graphics with an image of Stan Musial on the reverse is spectacular. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own the 1955 Hunter Wieners Gordon Jones in this form.
